Prof. Carlo Fonseka dies

Eminent medical academic, writer, aesthete and political activist Professor Carlo Fonseka passed away yesterday following a brief illness. Fonseka was 86 years old at the time of his death.

Prof. Fonseka, one of Sri Lanka’s best known intellectuals, was a former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and, a former president of the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

He was appointed the President of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) in January 2012 and his tenure ended in June 2017.

He was a prominent member of the Trotskyist Lanka Sama Samaja Party and a member of the party’s Central Committee and Politburo and led its branch in Kotte. He was also a vocal critic of private medical education.

Prof. Fonseka was a fellow of the Ceylon College of Physicians and the Sri Lanka College of General Practitioners. He has served as president of the Arts Council of Sri Lanka, Chairman of the Vijaya Kumaratunga Memorial Hospital, Chairman of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol and was a member of the University Grant Commission.

Prof. Fonseka was one of six South-East Asia Region awardees of the World No Tobacco Day 2012 Awards. He was a lyricist and composer and has produced a number of albums including Carlochita Gee (1992) and Raththaran Duwe (2006). He was also a long-time espouser of rationalism and critical thought.

The remains of Prof.Carlo Fonseka will be handed over to the Ragama Medical Faculty according to his last will, BBC News Sinhala reported.

Sri Lankan physician, academic and political activist Professor Carlo Fonseka passed away today following a brief illness. Fonseka was 86 years old at the time of his death.
