Funds misused in Sabaragamuwa road projects - Governor

State funds have largely been misused when carrying out road development projects in the Sabaragamuwa Province under the former ruling period of the province, Sabaragamuwa Governor Dhamma Dissanayake said.

According to him 10 to 50 per cent of state funds have been misused when carrying out road development activities during that period. The Governor made these remarks while commencing the construction process of the Halmilleketiya - Hingura road recently in Embilipitiya.

The Governor said that several incidents of monetary fraud, corruption and misuse had occurred when constructing and renovating road network in the province. However he added that there is no room for corruption or monetary misconduct now as all loopholes have been closed.

“It is important to have a participatory collective development monitoring strategy. The strategy will closely monitor development activities to prevent state funds being misused. Besides, village based observation committees will also be set up for monitoring road development projects carried out in the Sabaragamuwa province” he added.
