Kalametiya fishing folk await compensation

Fisher folk of Kalametiya lament that they have not been provided with any compensation for their craft that were gutted in the fire at the Kalametiya Fisheries Harbour two months ago.

They said they now lack livelihoods and their loved ones go through severe hardships as a result. The fire gutted 27 fishing craft anchored at the Kalametiya fisheries harbor in Hungama two months ago.

The Kalametiya Fisheries Association Chairman said that the value of the destroyed fishing craft is about Rs. 500,000. He said five fishing craft were partially damaged and fishing nets and many other fishing gear were reduced to ashes in the fire. Hungama police said a shed close to the harbor might have been set on fire by an unruly element and that the fire had caught the fishing craft anchored at the harbor. The Tangalle Urban Council Fire Brigade doused the fire.
