Action against Wilgamuwa sand mining

Mining sand along the Mahaveli River in Maraka, Wilgamuwa has polluted the environment immensely, members of the District Environment Committee stated at its recently held meeting at the Matale Secretariat Auditorium.

Matale Additional Secretary Ishan Wjethilaka chaired the meeting.

Well water in the area has dried up resulting in a major drinking water issue. A high number of people suffering from various renal diseases have been detected in the area recently, officials said.

Only three sand miners have permits to mine sand along the Mahaweli River in Maraka. However, over 18 unauthorized sand mining locations are operative in the area, residents said..

“Certain local politicians are behind the illegal act and swift actions must be taken against them, they said.
