DMC secures Kalutara beach

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in the Kalutara district avoided further damage caused to the Kalutara coastal belt in the strong waves during the last week by erecting sand bunds.

Heavy winds and rain damaged the beach. Several coconut trees uprooted in the strong waves breaking on the beach. Beachside houses were also heavily damaged.

The DMC took these measures in consultation with Kalutara District Secretary U.D.C. Jayalal and the Coastal Conservation Department.

However, the sand bunds are obstructing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, residents said.
