Concert seeks to integrate prison inmates with society

The Lalitha Siri Sara concert organised by the Prisons Department where prisoners will perform will be held at BMICH on September 8 evening.

President Maithripala Sirisena will grace the occasion as the chief guest, while Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorala will participate as the guest of honour. Nearly 100 prisoners including 12 females, joined by 16 prison officers and 12 female officers will perform at this concert. Of the 12 female inmates, two are from Thailand and one is from the Czech Republic.

The concert has been organised as another phase of the programme to rehabilitate prisoners. The group of 100 to perform at this concert has been selected from 24,000 prisoners from prisons across the country.

According to Prisons Commissioner (Rehabilitation and Skills Development) Chandana Ekanayake, the revenue generated by the concert will be donated to the Prisoners’ Welfare Society.

Prisons Commissioner General Vijayanath Tennakoon will be present on the occasion.
