The management of the Chilaw General Hospital launched an investigation yesterday morning into the death of a young girl who was receiving treatment at the hospital. This was following a complaint made by the girl’s relatives against the hospital staff, accusing them of negligence.

The patient, 21-year-old Heshani Sapni of Welihena, Chilaw, is said to be a renowned sportswoman who had displayed her talents here and abroad.

After being hospitalised for 13 days, she had been admitted to the ICU on August 27 as her condition became serious. Her mother, Sagarika Fernando, said Heshani was admitted to hospital after she started vomiting. She added that Heshani’s condition had worsened due to the negligence of the hospital staff. She alleged that the staff had also turned down her request to transfer her daughter to the Colombo National Hospital.

A postmortem examination was due to be held at the Chilaw Hospital, yesterday. Chilaw Hospital Director Dr. D.A.O. Wijewickrema declined to make any statement on the death until he received the postmortem report.
