Kandy Sports Round up : T20 for EW Balasuriya trophy

andy Youth CC has made all arrangements to come out with a T20 invitation cricket tournament for a trophy in the name of E.W. Balasuriya one of the most versatile sportsman, sports benefactor, and philanthropist and above all a gentleman, of the highest caliber.

Kandy SC starts training

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club has commenced training for the upcoming rugby season with a new coach Fazil Marija. He took up the coaching of KSC to give back to the sport from which he gained so much. He started as assistant coach to Sean Wijesinghe last season. Sean has migrated to Canada. Fazil was assistant to Sean last season. The assistant coach is Viraj Prasanna, a former CR & FC and national hooker, who is vastly experienced in the coaching field. They are well supported by the team manager Kapila de Silva who is in his 12th year. There are 40 players in the squad and at present nearly 25 are at practices. A keen follower of the game Nigel Ratwatte will lead the team. The treasurer of the team will be Aruna Sanjeewa “Moby” Perera, and the team boy N. Siva Kumar..

Trinity Plate champs, Dharmaraja Shield runner-up

At the inter schools under 18 ten-a-side rugby tournament Trinity College had to give a good fight to St. Joseph's College to win the Plate championship by 17 points to 5. Sri Sumangala were beaten by St.Joseph's in the semis 0-43. In the Shield final Dharmaraja College went down to Thurstan College by 14 points to 45 to take second place. The other three schools from Kandy, Kingswood lost to D.S. Senanayake in the Bowl semi-final by 14 points to 19 and in the quarterfinals St. Sylvester's went down to Isipathana 0-26 and St. Anthony’s were beaten by 12-17 by Lumbini.

Prasad Ranawaka to continue as Kingswood coach

St. Anthony’s College captain of 2002 and former Kandy CC, Kandy Youth CC and Sri Lanka u19 cricketer 36 year old Prasad Daminda Ranawaka who was a fine slow left arm spinner and right hand batsman during his playing days will continue as the head coach of Kingswood College senior cricket team. He has an experience of 12 years of coaching and was district coach of Sri Lanka Cricket for five years. He has also coached his old school juniors and seniors, Kandy Youth CC. Kurunegala Youth CC. He is being guided by cricket consultant Malcolm Perera who coached Kingswood and many other schools and is also the former Director-Coaching SL Cricket and was coach of Bangladesh junior cricket.

Trinity for a new rugby head coach

Trinity College will appoint a new rugby coach for the first fifteen team. The new coach is expected to take over from October. The school has called for applications. Trinity College is the second school in the Island to take up to rugby in 1906 and the only school to continue the game todate. They have produced top teams and top class players, coaches and referees. According to sources the successful coach who is going to take over the coaching must have at least three years of experience as a head coach of a school or a club and minimum qualification of World Rugby Level 1 and 2 coaching accreditation.

Isuru completes diploma in sports massaging

T.M. Isuru Maduwantha a product of Kingswood College Kandy and an Undergraduate of the Department of Sports Science University of Sri Jayawardenepura has completed a Diploma in Sports Massage therapy. He is good football player representing Kingswood College, York SC Kandy and University of Sri Jayewardenepura. At present he is the goalkeeping coach of Kingswood College and Manchester City Academy of Kandy. Anyone keen to get his help can reach him on 0768439192.

T20Is in Pallekele

Sri Lanka and New Zealand T20I matches will be played at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium on September 1, 3 and 6 with all matches starting at 7pm under lights. The teams are expected to arrive in Kandy on August 29 and will be housed at Hotel Earls Regency. Tickets will be out for sale for the three Kandy games from Monday at the Pallekelle grounds and KDCA office at Asgiriya.

Kandy ICBT to do well

The 2nd ICBT inter campus rugby sevens will kick-off in Colombo at the Royal Complex today. Kandy ICBT will come out with a top side and are expected do well. Their first game is against Royal Institute ICBT. Ten teams will be seen in action in the cup, plate and bowl.

KYCC-KCC ends in no-decision

The Governor’s Trophy Limited Over match between Kandy Youth CC and Kandy CC, a home and home battle ended in a no-decision at St. Anthony’s College grounds Katugastota, due to bad weather. Kandy Youth CC batting first made 165 runs in 47.4 overs, with Yeshan Wickremarachchi making a quick 42,Sasith Hirudika 52 and Himesh Iranga 29. The two bowlers who did well with the ball were Sajith Palihawadana 3 for 14 and Kavindu Nadishan 4 for 29. In reply Kandy CC were 67 for 1 in 11.4 over’s when rain ended play.

Kandy school U16 hockey players getting ready

All Kandy schools who are doing well in the game of hockey are preparing for the under 16 boys and girls hockey tournament which will take place mid of next month. It is organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association. In Kandy hockey at both boys and girls school level is quite healthy and successful, especially with the girls’ schools dominating the game.

Dharmaraja U17 cricket

Dharmaraja College were beaten by Nalanda College in their Singer Trophy under 17 Division 1 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament second round match organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association along with Singer Sri Lanka PLC. This was their third match of the second round and was played on Saturday at Campbell Park. Rajans batting first were all out in 42.4 over’s for 130 (Chetiya Weerakoon 47, Dinith Samaraweera 4/37). Nalandians in their turn made 131 for the loss of 4 wickets in 27 overs (Rashan Dissanayake 44, Raveen de Silva 36 n.o.). In the first round Dharmaraja beat Vidyartha College, Sri Sumangala College and St Mary’s College Kegalle, and qualified for the second round. In the second round they beat Tissa Vidyalaya , Kalutara in the first game and in the second game went down to St Joseph’s College and to Nalanda College.

Saliya Kumar assistant coach

Saliya Kumar who learnt his rugby at Vidyartha College and later crossed over to Trinity College and also played for Kandy SC and Sri Lanka has been appointed as one of the assistant coaches of the Sri Lanka sevens team, who are preparing for the Asian rugby sevens to be played in South Korea. Saliya was one time coach of Vidyartha College seniors and later was assistant coach of Trinity College senior side. He also coached Kandy SC 7’s team and this season was the Trinity College under 18 coach.

Kandy gears up for schools cricket season

All schools have stated training for the 2019/20 inter school season, though the weather is not in favor for the game are at practices. The schools are blessed with good talented players. Dharmaraja College are having their practices at Lake View grounds. They are in group “B”. Kingswood College one of the oldest cricket playing schools, with some experience players will be fielding a well balanced side. St. Anthony’s College who were a major force at one time are out to redeem some of their lost prestige in the forthcoming season. They have finally earned their promotion to the top division in the first XI circuit and are in Group “B”. Trinity College will field a talented and experienced side, packed with some of last season’s players. They are in Group ‘D’. St. Sylvester’s are in Group “B”. Vidyartha College will be fielding an all-round side. Sri Rahula College one of the oldest cricket playing schools is all-out to bring the game back to its former position. Wariyapola Sri Sumangala earlier known as (St. Paul’s) College, has cricket as one of their major sports. Madina Central College Madawella is a school from Kandy District, that gives a big hand for sports, mainly cricket, Nugawella Central College plays in the lower division and are sure to do well this time. This school produced leg-spinner Saranga Rajaguru who went on to represent Sri Lanka in the ICC Youth Cricket World Cup 2010 in New Zealand. The other schools who are gearing up are Walala A Ratnayake Central College, Ranabima Royal College and Zahira College Akurana.

Final round up of Manchester City Academy Fustal

The Manchester City Football Academy Futsal quarters, semis and finals will be worked off on August 25 Sunday at the Deyanawella Futsal center, where six teams from under 12 and 8 teams from under 14 are taking part. According to the chief organizer S.A. Weerasinghe one of Sri Lanka’s veterans in football and coaching, an A grade license holder in coaching will be the technical director of the program. Kick-off is at 2 pm. The objective of Futsal is to produce quality players.

Dishal all out to do well in chess

Dishal Nimsara Weerasekera, a nine year old student of Sri Chandananda Buddhist School, Kandy secured 8th place (Under Rapid Category) in the Under 10 Age Group at the Asian Youth Chess Championship. He also represented Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Chess Championship and is doing well in chess.
