Prison officer in shooting case discharged

The Kalutara Chief Magistrate discharged a prison officer, a suspect in the shooting case that occurred close to the Kalutara Remand Prison, where two prison officers and five detainees were killed when an unidentified gunmen fired at the prison bus transporting detainees to the Homagama Magistrate’s Court last year.

When the case was called before Court, the prison officials produced the prison officer who was in remand custody before the magistrate and informed court that the prison officer had abetted and aided the unidentified gunmen to commit the alleged murders.

The Chief Magistrate who considered the investigations report submitted to Court by the Colombo Criminal Investigations Dept (CID) released the prison officer as there was no prima facia case established against him. The other suspects were remanded pending further investigations.
