Four Avant Garde case suspects further remanded

Galle Additional Magistrate Pavitra Sanjeewani Pathirana further remanded the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh suspects in the Avant Garde floating armoury that operated near the Galle harbour until September 6 when they were produced before her yesterday.

The four suspects further remanded are the fourth suspect, former Rakna Lanka Chairman Victor Samaraweera, fifth suspect, retired Major General Palitha Fernando, sixth respondent, retired Major General Karunarathna Banda Adikari Egodawela and seventh respondent former Police Commission Secretary Saman Dissanayake.

Seventh suspect Saman Dissanayake who was not present before court the previous trial date for he was under medical treatment at the Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital was produced in court by the prison officials yesterday.

Subsequently attorney for the seventh suspect pleaded the magistrate to permit his client to continue medical care and treatment at Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital to which prison officials objected.

Prison officials stated that the suspect had to be accompanied under tight security and pleaded for an order to keep him at the Prisons hospital.Responding to the Prison Officials’ request, the Additional Magistrate requested them to make the same application before the Chief Magistrate and allowed the suspect’s clinical stay at the same hospital.

MV Avant Garde was found to contain 549 T-56 weapons, 264 84-S weapons and 204,674 bullets during an inspection on October 6, 2015, while docked at the Galle Port.

The floating armoury unlawfully operated by Avant Garde Maritime Services near the Galle harbour was detained by the police and handed over to Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations. The suspects were represented by attorneys Ajith Pathirana and Harith Hettiarachchi, while State Counsel Janaka Bandara with IP Senarath of the Criminal Investigations Department prosecuted.
