Four tipper trucks transporting garbage from Colombo to the Aruwakkalu garbage dump were attacked by an unidentified group near the 4th km post on the Puttalam - Mannar old road in the wee hours of yesterday (August 21) for the second time.
Puttalam police said the four trucks were among a convoy of 29 transporting garbage from Colombo to Aruwakkalu.
The tipper drivers complained that the iron poles and rocks were used to attack the tippers and even tried to drag them out of their seats without success.Police said minor damage had been caused to the tippers and the army and police were escorting the tipper convoys to offer them protection against attack.
Tippers were attacked at Manativu on August 19 morning as well and four suspects arrested in this connection were released on bail by the Puttalam Magistrate’s court.
Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said instructions have been given to tighten security provided to trucks transporting garbage to Aruwakkalu. He said several complaints of pelting stones at garbage trucks were received yesterday and Puttalam Police have been asked to take stern action against the offenders.
Army Media Spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu said the army security provided to garbage transporting trucks has also been increased to prevent unscrupulous and disruptive activities by people. He said the Army is assisting the Police to give adequate security to the trucks.
