Former Lanka Sathosa GM gets Rs. 50,000 fine, jail term

Former Lanka Sathosa acting General Manager Wimal Perera, was sentenced to one-year imprisonment after he was found guilty of selling 1,000 metric tons of white rice at a price lower than the controlled price incurring a loss of Rs.4 million to the government.Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne made this order when the case was taken up before Court yesterday. The Magistrate fined him Rs.50,000.The suspect was released on bail after considering his appeal.The suspect was released on a surety of Rs.300,000.

The case filed against the Wimal Perera by Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in an incident where a loss of Rs.4 million had been incurred to the government when importing rice to Lanka Sathosa in 2002.

President’s Counsel Shanaka Ranasinghe appearing on behalf of the suspect informed court that his client is currently lecturing at the Colombo University. He stated that his client had only performed his duties on the instructions of his superior officers.

However the Magistrate observed that the suspect should take responsibility for his actions and decisions made by higher authorities.
