Actg. IGP gives CID short deadline for 6 high-profile cases

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickramaratne has directed the CID to submit reports on investigations conducted on six high profile cases including the murder of national rugby player Wasim Thajudeen and journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga on or before August 23.

Earlier, on August 15, Attorney General Dappula de Livera had instructed the acting Inspector General of Police to “expedite” investigations into five high-profile cases without delay and direct the completed investigations to the AG’s department for prosecutions.

The five cases are the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge in 2009, the murder of Wasim Thajudeen in 2012, killing of 17 aid workers in Muttur in 2006, abduction and assault of journalist Keith Noyahr in 2008 and abduction of 11 youths in 2008-2009 who are listed as missing since then..

Police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera yesterday told news media that, in addition to the cases mentioned by the Attorney General, IGP Wickremeratne had also ordered the senior DIG of the CID to submit a report on the investigations concerning journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, reported missing since January 24, 2010.

Gunasekera said the acting IGP had instructed the senior DIG of the CID through a letter to submit separate files on each investigation while highlighting the progress of probes under 11 points.

These points are: the date when the CID received instructions to probe the offence, the date probes had actually begun, current status of the investigations, details uncovered during probes and details of identified suspects and arrested suspects and, details about property belonging to them.

The other important data requested are: the date when the courts were informed and, if legal action had been filed, the case number, details of observations and the current status of action taken by courts, whether all suspects related to each case have been identified and details of arrested suspects, whether there is enough evidence to take legal action against the suspects or more details are necessary, whether instructions have been sought from the AG’s Department, what actions have been taken if instructions have been received and, if AG has not given any instructions action taken thereafter, if investigations have not been completed reasons for the delay. The CID is finally asked to propose a justifiable period to complete investigations in pending cases.
