Young guns upset bronze medallists Bandara and Dharmasena

Bronze medallists at the Indonesian President’s Cup Gayan Indika Bandara of Navy and Piyal Dharmasena of Army were sent crashing out of the 79th BASL Layton Cup Boxing Tournament in the semifinals worked at Royal MAS Arena yesterday.

Organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, this championship which also serves as a trial to select the final pool for South Asian Games scheduled to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from December 1 to 9, has attracted 125 men and 37 women boxers.

Reigning Light Fly (49kg) national champion Sanjeewa Nuwan lived up to his top ranking to win a 4-1 split decision against Bandara while Roshan Sandaruwan of Slimline outgunned Dharmasena to earn a unanimous decision in the Fly (52kg) weight contest.

Sanjeewa Nuwan made Bandara look pedestrian as he ran circles around his opponent while breaking the almost passive defence of his opponent. Bandara attempted to counter with power punches and finished strongly but failed to find the target regularly with the lanky soldier keeping his distance and having done enough to get the nod of the judges. Sanjeewa will face Hasitha Nuwan Jinadasa, 21, a four-time Stubbs’ winner from Dharmaraja in the final. Jinadasa, a southpaw representing Slimline, was an impressive winner against Air Force’s P.G.E. Madushan.

Former Sri Lanka Youth boxer Sandaruwan outpointed Dharmasena to set up a thrilling final with Slimline team mate Lasindu Eranda, who eliminated top rank fly weight and reigning national champion M.V.I.R.S. Bandara of Army winning a split 4-1 points decision. Eranda frustrated the rugged soldier with speedy combinations and going toe-to-toe in a thrilling contest.

Ruwan Tilina Weerakkodi, a silver medallist at the last South Asian Games, and top seed in the Bantam (56kg) weight class, won a narrow 3-2 split points decision against rising Police star Rukmal Prasanna who fought gallantly despite a swelling above his left eye. The 20-year-old youngster, a former Sri Lanka youth international, was unfazed by the powerful blows of Weerakkodi, 31, who came out swinging.

He will be up against another youngster in the Bantam weight final, Nuwan Amarawansha, 23, a two-time Stubbs champion from Peradeniya, who scored an impresive points win against Navy’s Nuwan Pradeep de Silva.

Among the women bouts, Sajeewani Cooray of Air Force dominated her Bantam (54kg) weight contest against Thuruliya BC’s Kawshalya leading with powerful right uppercuts.Veteran Army pugilist L.G. Chandrika, 36, showed that age has not weakened her fighting skills, dropping her gutsy young opponent from Air Force Thiwanka twice on her way to a unanimous points win in the Light (60kg) weight semifinal.
