Anandian Thushira de Silva Dharmaraja’s new cricket coach

Vastly experienced Thushira de Silva, who has coached Ananda College has taken over as head cricket coach of the Dharmaraja College ahead of their 2019/20 inter-school cricket season. Dharmaraja College are at serious training, they will play in the Division I group B. Thirty-six teams will take part in four groups of 9 teams each. Each team will have to play against all the teams within the group in the first round. Apart from the 8 tournament games, a maximum of 7 traditional games will be considered for points.

Dharmaraja are blessed with six of last year’s players and top class batsmen Dulaj Bandara is tipped to lead the side. The Schools U19 Division I Cricket Tournament will be held from September. Thushira de Silva learnt his cricket at Ananda College where he played in 1986 and 1987 as wicketkeeper and opening batsman. Soon after school he played for Nomads SC and 12 years for Tamil Union C & AC. He also played for Sri Lanka under 24. With all his experience he is sure to give his best in coaching the Rajans.

Nigel keen to give of his best

Nigel Ratwatte, a sevens and fifteens player with some good performance to his credit, is keen to give off his best as captain to Kandy SC in the coming season. Nigel has established himself as one of the best back division players in Sri Lanka. He is an old boy of Trinity College.

Billiards and snooker in need of a push

One time Kandy clubs gave a big hand for billiards and snooker and produced several champions and teams but sad to say today it is not so. Today only Mahanuwara YMBA keeps the cue table lights on and all other clubs like Kings Cue Club are now no more. Kandy Garden Club, Kandy Club and Kandy YMMA are not keen and no member participates in tournaments conducted by the controlling body.

TCK hockey foundation AGM

Trinity College hockey foundation, which gives a big hand for the sport will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Friday August 23 at 6.30 pm at the BRC clubhouse.

TCK junior inter-house football

The Junior School Inter-House Football tournament took place on July 31 at the Junior School grounds with a total of 68 boys taking part. The winners were Campbell House with Carter Blues as the runners up.

Walala A Ratnayake girls and boys champs

Walala A Ratnayake Central a school which gives a big hand for sports, won the Girls and Boys senior athletic championship at the Central Province Education Zone meet. At this meet over 2,000 girls and boys from Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya took part.

Not a single Kandy school won a title

One of the fastest growing sports in Kandy, rugby it is sad to say that not a single school was able to win the first place in the Cup, Plate, Bowl or Shield at the schools under 16 ten-a-side rugby tournament which was played last weekend in Kandy. Trinity who came into the plate final went down to D.S. Senanayake. Last year’s cup runners-up Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, St. Sylvester’s, St Anthony’s, Sri Sumangala, and Kingswood failed to give their best.

Junior School Inter-House Badminton

Trinity College junior school Inter House Badminton tournament took place before their holidays with 5 houses competing in two categories in singles and doubles. Singles Champion was D.S.H. Ranasinghe (Carter Blues) and Doubles Champions were P.G. Dissanayake and T.M. Ranaraja (Boarding House). The overall champions were Carter Reds with 32 wins in the singles and 18 in the doubles. Carter Blues were runners-up with 40 wins in the singles and no wins in the doubles.

T20 in Kandy

Kandy cricket lovers are happy that Sri Lanka and New Zealand are due to play a three-match Twenty20 series at Pallekele International Stadium on September 1, 3 and 6. Kandy has remained largely starved of international cricket for some time. Both teams will be housed at hotel Earls Regency.

Peradeniya University men’s hockey champs

Peradeniya University which is the oldest university in Sri Lanka won the men’s hockey title at the Sri Lanka University Games Hockey Tournament played at the Matara Uyanwatta Football grounds. The Peradeniya side defeated Colombo University 1-0, in a well fought game, where both sides played good quality hockey. Twelve teams in four groups took part. On the way to the finals Peradeniya beat Jaffna University 2-0 in the quarters and Rajarata University in the semis.

Oval ball player’s parents and fans are angry

Rugby players, parents and coaches are angry that there are no proper grounds for their school rugby. Some have decided to keep their children out of rugby. Today there are only two grounds in Kandy at Bogambara and Nittawela. When rugby’s is played at Bogambara due to the hardness of the ground many players get injured.

TCK junior swimmers Situm, Esala, Aakil shine

Trinity College’s Sithum Tennakoon, Esala Randune and Aakil Mohamed did well at the inaugural invitation swimming meet held at Bernard Aluwihare sports complex Matale organized by the former Matale Sports Development officer and members. Over 100 swimmers from Matale, Kandy, Dambulla were seen in action. Tennakoon won the U10 boys 25 meter freestyle and butterfly, Randune was first in the u12 - 25 metre butterfly and backstroke, and Akil won the u14 boys - 15 meter freestyle and backstroke and was placed first in the u14 age category.

All Kandy schools in top form for u18 rugby

Kandy schools Trinity, St. Anthony’s, Kingswood, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, St. Sylvester’s Sri Sumangala and Sri Rahula rugby teams are ready to take part in the under 18 division I and II tournament which will be worked off at the Royal Complex and Racecourse today and tomorrow.

Madawala Haj festival cricket 7’s

The annual seven a side tennis ball cricket tournament organized by the Madawala Youth SC on August 13 and 14 was a grand success with 56 teams taking part at the Madina College grounds. Madawala Youth SC team emerged champions and Agni SC were runner-up, The winners were presented with a trophy and Rs. 20,000 and second place team too got a trophy and Rs. 10,000. There were awards for best batsmen, bowler and fielder. A big hand should go to the sponsors Al-Haj M. Haneef of Go-far-taxi, Al-Haj M. Fawas of Victoria Marketing and Al-Haj M. Akram of UDS Management. The secretary of the Madawala Youth SC M. Waseel did a good job in organising the tournament.

Dharmaraja vs Nalanda u17 cricket

Dharmaraja College under 17 cricket team who did well in the school’s tournament where they won their first round matches against Vidyartha College, Sri Sumangala College and St Mary’s College Kegalle qualified for the second round where they beat Tissa Vidyalaya Kalutara in the first game. The second game against Nalanda was postponed due to rain. In the game played on Thursday, they went down to St Joseph’s College in Colombo by 120 runs. St. Joseph’s scored 225 for 7 in (50) overs (Dinal Anuradha 98 n.o., Mithira Thenura 59. Anjana Dikkumbura 2 for 35; Tishan Herath 2 for 42). Dharmaraja 105 in 34 overs (Chetiya Weerakoon 46. Dinith Wellalage 5 for 7, Yesith Rupasinghe 3 for 19). The next game is today against Nalanda College which was earlier postponed.
