Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Kalutara District Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama told the Daily News in Kurunegala on Friday, that he would not support Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the upcoming Presidential Election.
MP Welgama said he would support President Maithripala Sirisena, the leader of the SLFP if he contests in the forthcoming Presidential Election.
“However, if the SLFP does not field a candidate of its own for the upcoming Presidential Election, there is a possibility of supporting an independent candidate instead. The prime responsibility of the SLFP is to take the correct decision at this crucial moment in politics,” he said.
He also said that if the SLFP is unable to take the correct decision at this moment, he would not be able to stay in the party any longer. He added that the SLFP cannot join the UNP once again. According to the MP, all responsible top authorities of the SLFP should protect the identity, dignity and the superiority of the SLFP.
“I personally do not want to support Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the forthcoming Presidential Election,” MP Welgama said.
