Five gangland suspects arrested

The Special Task Force (STF) had arrested three suspects with underworld connections yesterday in connection with the hacking to death of two gangland figures in Madampitiya last Thursday, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

The suspects were arrested by a Police Special Task Force (STF) team at Mattakkuliya where two swords have also been seized.

According to Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara, the three-wheeler found abandoned at the Madampitiya cemetery where the murder took place, was found to belong to W.A.Niroshani, the wife of notorious drug dealer ‘Kudu Roshan’. Niroshani is also currently in prison.

The Police had conducted investigations based on the registration of the three-wheeler which revealed the address of the house belonging to Niroshani.

Upon raiding the house, the three suspects were arrested in the vicinity and the two swords were found in the house.

Two suspected members of an underworld gang were hacked to death by members of a rival criminal gang near the Madampitiya cemetery in Grandpass, Colombo, on Thursday while they were attending a funeral at the Madampitiya Cemetary.

The incident had occurred at around 4. p.m. The attack was carried out by four individuals who had arrived in a three-wheeler armed with machetes and attacked the victims, who had succumbed on admission to the Colombo National Hospital.

Police said that both victims were members of an organized criminal gang. They are suspected to have been murdered by members of a rival gang.

One of the victims was identified as an underworld figure known by the name ‘Aanamalu Ranga’ (39 yrs) while the other victim is a 22-year-old youth.

The three arrested suspects have been identified as 19-year-old Mohammed Ramlan, a resident of Gemunupura, Mattakkuliya, 18-year-old Sudesh Asanka, a resident of Sampathpura, Mattakkuliya and 34-year-old Kolitha de Silva, a resident of Waragoda Road, Kelaniya. Kolitha de Silva is said to be known as ‘Aja’ and he is the younger brother of ‘Kudu Roshan’.

“All three suspects had been handed over to the Mattakkuliya Police and further investigations into the incident is being carried out,” SP Gunasekara said.

Another five suspects involved in the hacking of the two persons at Madampitiya were arrested by the STF yesterday while they were fleeing in a three wheeler in the Wattala, Hunupitiya area.

Further investigations are in progress to recover the swords, machetes and other weapons used in the attack.

The three suspects who were arrested on Thursday were produced before the Aluthkadé Police and ordered to be remanded until August 23rd.
