Anjalika meets Janali in women’s singles final

Fancied Anjalika Kurera will take on Janali Manamperi in the women’s singles final tomorrow after clearing semifinal hurdles of the ongoing 104th National Tennis Championship continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) hard courts yesterday.

Both semis turned out to be exciting battles and dished out a superb contest among the rivals. Anjalika in a close contest beat Anika Seneviratne 7/6(8-6), 2/6, 6/3. The exciting first set saw a ding dong battle where Anjalika grabbed the victory in a tie breaker. Anika bounced back strongly winning the second set comfortably extending the match for a third set. Anjalika played superbly making no room for her opponent to pose a threat and won the third set easily.

Anjalika earlier beat Kemali Herath 6/1, 6/0 in quarters and had the better of Oshini Herath 6/2, 6/2 in the second round.

The second semifinal saw Janali Manamperi triumph over Rukshika Wijesuriya 3/6, 7/6(5), 6/2. Janali faced a shock defeat in the first set where Rukshika dominated the match to take the early lead 3/6. A tense competition was on the cards during the following set where both players fought hard to overcome each other.

Janali sealed the second set victory in a tie breaker to stand equal going for the deciding third set. Janali dominated the third set as Rukshika was unable to counterattack and won the set comfortably to book her final berth.

Janali beat Thania Doloswala 6/4, 2/6, 6/1 in quarters and defeated Tuvini de Alwis 6/3, 6/3 in the second round.
