Mahinda’s SLFP membership now automatically cancelled– UPFA Gen. Secy.

Mahinda will face difficulties from loss of membership:
Gotabaya not yet member of SLPP or SLFP:

Opposition Leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will face many difficulties because he has automatically lost membership in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party due to his joining another political party, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera, MP, said yesterday.

Amareweera was addressing media along with MP Weerakumara Dissanayake at the UPFA weekly media briefing held at the SLFP headquarters yesterday. Responding to questions, he said that the party membership of parliamentarian Mahinda Rajappaksa has been “automatically cancelled” when he obtained membership in another political party.

“According to the party constitution, the SLFP membership is cancelled when obtaining the membership of another party. Accordingly the SLFP membership of Rajapaksa is cancelled by now and therefore he has to undergo several difficulties in future,” he said.

Asked whether the SLFP would take disciplinary action against Rajapaksa, Amaraweera said that such a decision has not been taken yet but it may be discussed at the next Central Committee meeting. Ameraweera said that the SLFP was looking forward hopefully at the outcome of the on-going negotiations with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

Therefore, any disciplinary action taken against Rajapaksa, should not harm the on-going discussions.

He further said that the stance of Gotabaya Rajapaksa was a positive feedback to the negotiations since he has not obtained the membership of the SLPP yet.

When media questioned him whether Gotabaya Rajapaksa will obtain the membership of SLFP, Amaraweera said that such a situation will pave the way for ending many issues.

“However we will never let anyone to dissolve the SLFP through joining any other party,” he warned.

The SLFP stance relating to the future activities and the forthcoming presidential election will be announced at the SLFP Convention scheduled to be held on September 03rd at Suagathdasa Indoor Stadium. The SLFP Central Committee has already passed a proposal to name a Presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential election, he disclosed.

He further said that the SLFP may nominate a Presidential candidate after considering the outcome of the on-going discussions with the SLPP. Asked whether President Maithripala Sirisena will be the candidate, the said that the President has not refused to contest the election.

Asked whether the SLFP would assist the SLPP at the Presidential Election, he said that it will depend on whether the SLPP accepts their proposals on policies.

He accused the Government of not having a proper mechanism to take the country forward. He added that the loan burden has increased to trillions. According to him, 40 per cent of loan amount drains back to the donor country as the result of the faults in loan agreements. MP Weerakumara Dissanayake said that the SLPP did not have a proper plan to rescue the country. According to him the SLFP has 1.5 million voter base and therefore no party can obtain an election victory without having the SLFP support as the decisive power is with the SLFP.

Dissanayake said that certain persons in the SLPP are trying to defeat Gotabaya Raapaksa at the Presidential Election. Some other are trying to destroying the minority votes.

Former SLFP General Secretary Rohana Laksman Piyadasa said that SLFP has its own dignity and therefore special attention will be drawn to strengthening it when taking decisions.
