Upcoming Presidential Election:

SLFP has no intention of aiding UNP: MP

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has no intention of aiding the United National Party (UNP) in the upcoming Presidential Election, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said.

He was speaking at a media conference for journalists of the Kurunegala District which was held on Wednesday in Hettipola, Kurunegala.

Jayasekara said that the SLFP Working Committee had requested President Maithripala Sirisena to contest the upcoming Presidential Election, adding that if he were to give a positive answer, they would still support him.

The SLFP General Secretary said he was committed to protecting the dignity of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

He added that claims made by Parliamentarian Dr. Sarath Amunugama about the SLFP supporting the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP’s) Presidential Candidate, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, were false.

Jayasekara said that it would be beneficial for the SLFP if President Maithripala Sirisena were to contest the upcoming Presidential Election. However, he added that the SLFP would support any candidate that is selected from the party.

He said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s Central Working Committee would take measures against its parliamentarians who have joined other political parties while violating the rules and regulations of the SLFP.
