Sri Lanka to host next ATBC Asia-Pacific Conference

Sri Lanka is to host the next Asia-Pacific Conference of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC-AP 2019) from September 10 to 13, under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The event is expected to draw 200 foreign participants, and an equal number of local experts and students. ATBC-AP 2019 is a gathering of experts and conservation practitioners to take stock of the current state of tropical biology and its conservation, particularly in the Asian region.

This conference is a key event for Sri Lanka as the platform is an opportunity for local participants from academic to research institutions, civil society organisations, as well as the private sector, to engage with foreign scientists to gain more understanding on using ecosystem services for local development strategies.

The event would consist of five plenary sessions and 32 technical workshops covering a variety of aspects related to the conservation of biodiversity in the Asia Pacific region.

The final declaration of the conference would provide local policymakers clear direction on how to achieve sustainable development with focus on biodiversity conservation. The event would be the platform for the formation of the Ecological Society of Sri Lanka. This society would work with a network of international ecological associations to provide scientific information and support future restoration and conservation efforts with the participation of all stakeholders in the country.

The Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation is a scientific professional society formed in 1963. It consists of students, researchers, educators, and conservation practitioners concerned with issues of science, conservation, development, and environmental policy in the tropics.
