Soldier on duty commits suicide

A trooper on duty at the Army Headquarters, Colombo, committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon early last morning.

Police said the soldier was on duty at the Army Headquarters sentry point when he had shot himself around 4.10 am yesterday. The deceased has been identified as a resident of Attanakadawala in Polonnaruwa area aged 27 and was attached to the Army Headquarters contingent.

The police media unit said the deceased soldier was serving in the Army Engineering Division. The Fort Police is conducting further investigations.There have been two other such suicides by military personnel recently.

One airman (SLAF) and one Army trooper, committed suicide earlier this month as well.
