Cabinet notified to pay MR’s Rs. 4,400 Mn outstanding debts

The Cabinet was notified at Tuesday’s meeting of debts of the previous President’s Office, prior to 2015, amounting to Rs. 4,400 million, seeking allocations from the 2020 budget for the settlement of these outstanding debts. Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told the Daily News that these were debts left behind by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and were expenditures for foreign travel and parties since 2007.The Cabinet paper to meet the debts has been presented by President Maithripala Sirisena. These payments were owed to 259 institutions for goods and services which had been obtained prior to 2015. The President had presented the Cabinet paper seeking allocations from the 2020 budget for the settlement of these outstanding bills.

It is reported that these outstanding payments were notified by the Auditor General and the President had accordingly presented the Cabinet paper at the Cabinet meeting.
