Over 45,000 IRCs in SL

There are over 45,000 registered criminals who are recognised as island reconvicted criminals (IRCs) in the country, Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Of them, 44,406 are males, he said.

All details, reports and photographs of each IRC have been sent to police stations across the country.

A person convicted of any of offence under the Criminal Procedure Code, such as as murder, rape, corruption, looting and fraud, and sentenced to imprisonment at least twice by court is listed as an IRC.

An IRC can be removed from this status only after a lapse of 70 years, SP Gunasekara said.
