EC Chairman calls for nomination to Parliament vacancy for Kurunegala

National Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya told the Daily News that the Commission had decided on Monday to inform the Kurunegala District District Returning Officer (DRO) and General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to nominate the candidate for the Parliamentary vacancy created by the recent death of Kurunegala District UPFA Parliamentarian Salinda Dissanayake.

The next candidate who obtained the highest number of preferential votes during the last Parliamentarian Election is Shantha Bandara, the SLFP Chief Organizer for the Dambadeniya electorate in the Kurunegala district.

Bandara resigned recently from his office as a national list Parliamentarian as he is eligible to be nominated as a Kurunegala District Parliamentarian from the preferential list. However, since Bandara was serving as a national list Parliamentarian at the time of the death of Salinda Dissanayake, he would most probably be re-nominated to the same post that he was holding at that time, Kurunegala senior Divisional Secretary W.E. Jayathilake said, when contacted by the Daily News yesterday.

In that case, former NWP PC Minister H.M.D.B. Herath has to be nominated as a Parliamentarian from the Kurunegala district as he is the candidate who received the next highest number of preferential votes after Bandara, Jayathilake said.
