‘UNP will field strong candidate for Presidency’

SLFP is yet to decide :

The UNP led coalition will field a strong candidate to contest the forthcoming Presidential Election, said State Minister Buddhika Pathirana at a media briefing in Kegalle recently.

Meanwhile State Minister Dilip Wedaarachchi said that if Minister Sajith Premdasa did not receive UNP nomination to contest the forthcoming Presidential election, he would come as a presidential candidate from another party.

National Freedom Front Media Spokesman Mohamed Muzammil alleged Sajith Premadasa was trying to imitate SLPP presidential nominee Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

However SLFP General Secretary Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera said the UNP and the SLPP, which are mainstream parties, did not have a proper leader.

Meanwhile UPFA Parliamentarian Nishantha Muthuhettigama said the SLFP had not arrived at a decision whether it would contest the Presidential Election single-handedly or in coalition with the SLPP. Muthuhettigama at a press conference in Galle said that if President Maithripala Sirisena did not come forward to contest the Presidential election, he would support the UNP led coalition at the forthcoming election.
