Candle lit Kataragama pola needs power

The Kataragama weekly pola has not been provided with electricity even though it is held from 2 pm to 10 pm on every Tuesday.

Traders sell goods in candle light and some traders use torches. A very few traders use small generators for the night.

Mingoneragala, Buttala, Bibila, Medagama, Wellawaya, Tissamaharama, Debarawewa and Pannegamuwa traders gather at the pola every Tuesday.

They are each charged Rs.100 to Rs. 200 although they do not get basic facilities.

Kataragama PS Chairman Chanaka Amil Rangana said he was not aware of the shortcomings of the pola so far and will provide the traders with basic facilities very soon.
