Landslide warning for Nuwara Eliya

A landslide warning for certain areas in the Nuwara Eliya District has been issued by National Building Research Organization (NBRO) in the context of the continued heavy rains.

The Ambagamuwa, Kotmale and Nuwaraeliya Divisional Secretariat divisions and surrounding areas have already been identified by the NBRO as areas with high landslide risk.

The NBRO now says that with rainfall over the past 24 hours exceeding 75mm, if the rain continues, residents in these areas should be alert for landslides.

Special attention should be paid to human-made cut slopes and roads because they are the locations most prone to landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures and ground subsidence the NBRO said in a communique. People should look out for pre-landslide signs such as the appearance of cracks on the ground, deepening of existing cracks and, ground subsidence, the NBRO said. The NBRO requests people living in landslide prone areas to move immediately from areas where they notice pre-landslide signs. They should be ready to move quickly to safe places if heavy rains continue, the communique said.

Communities are advised to follow the instructions given by the NBRO and Disaster Management Center.
