‘Social prejudices deny equal opportunities for women’

Social prejudices obstruct women and deny equal opportunities for them. Several structural and stereotype impediments prevent them from achieving their goals, Women and Media Collective Project Officer Wanamali Galappaththi said.

She was delivering the inaugural speech at the workshop held for female local government representatives in Galle to educate them about their responsibilities and challenges in serving the public.

Relationship between men and women is biological. It is defined as differences of roles and prospects fashioned on a social basis which is a specific cultural feature, she said.

The workshop was held under the theme, Geneder Sensitive Standards for Local Authorities on Environment’.

Several lectures were delivered on a number of topics on environmental issues of Local Government Authorities. Participants were provided with important information and guidance on theoretical and legal frameworks on woman and environmental governance, land rights, food, security and agriculture, water scarcity, gender and right to work, gender and education and domestic framework.

Counsel Chaturika Sathursinghe participated as a resource person. People’s representatives Ranjani Kumari, Gayathir Kanchana, D.K.Menaka and Nishanthi Predeepika were present.

Bope-Poddala and Weliigama Pradeshiya Sabhas and Galle Municipal Councillors spoke.
