Estate workers unhappy over rise in CWC’s membership fee

The Ceylon Workers Congress, a powerful trade union in the plantation sector, has increased monthly membership fees from Rs. 150 to Rs. 233.

Members of the party said the steep increase of Rs. 83 in the membership fees all at once is unfair.

They further said it is unfair for the party to increase the monthly membership fee of its members without raising their basic salary to cover the cost of living.

In reply, Ceylon Workers Congress Secretary Anusha Siwaraj said this membership fee increase will be made every two or three years after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for plantation workers.
