Paddy price to go up next season

The government is likely to increase the guaranteed price of paddy by the next cultivation season, Agriculture Minister P. Harrison said.

The Cabinet Paper in this regard is scheduled to be submitted in the near future, he said.

The Minister was speaking at a ceremony to distribute compensation for farmers in the Kurunegala district whose crops were damaged in the 2018 Yala season, held at the Kurunagala Town Hall under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday.

Minister Harrison said the decision to increase the guaranteed price of paddy had been taken since the price of paddy has not been increased in five seasons.

“After the price hike scheduled for the next cultivation season, the purchasing price of a kilo of samba would be increased from Rs. 41 to Rs. 46 and a kilo of nadu would be increased from Rs. 38 to Rs. 43,” the Minister said.
