Over 8,300 drunk drivers nabbed since July 5

Police apprehended 8,333 drunk drivers during raids conducted since July 5, a statement from Police Headquarters said yesterday.

During the 24-hour raids conducted from 6.00 am on Sunday to 6.00 am yesterday (12), 186 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

A special operation was launched by the police islandwide from July 5 to apprehend drunk drivers through the Law and Order Ministry which is under the purview of President Maithripala Sirisena.

According to Police Media Spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekara, the raids are mostly being carried out in Colombo and its suburbs. Police patrols and search missions are undertaken, while police officers dressed in civilian clothing are also deployed.

During the first 20 days of the ongoing campaign, police collected a total of Rs.140 million from drunk drivers, which is the highest collection ever for drunk driving fines.
