Brothel raided

Four suspects were arrested during a raid conducted at a brothel which operated under the guise of an Ayurvedic massage centre in Wattala on Sunday.

The Peliyagoda Western Province-North Divisional Crime Division, on a search warrant obtained from the Welisara Magistrate’s Court, conducted the raid. The suspects are between the ages of 27 and 47. They were identified as residents of Galnewa, Kelaniya, Nuwaraeliya and Nawalapitiya.

They were produced before the Welisara Magistrates’ Court yesterday. The Peliyagoda Western Province North Divisional Crime Division is investigating.

Child dies after falling into well

A two-and-a-half-year-old infant died after falling into a well near her house in Eththale in the Norochcholai Police Division on Sunday.

She was rushed to the Kalpitiya Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The deceased was identified as Farook Hasna, a resident of Eththale.

The postmortem examination was carried out at the Kalpitiya Hospital yesterday. Norochcholai Police are investigating.

Held over illegal gem mining

Bagawanthalawa Police, acting on a tip-off, took two suspects into custody over illegal gem mining and seized the tools which they used at the Kotiyagala Estate, recently. The suspects were identified as residents of Bagawanthalawa, aged 31 and 32. They have been released on police bail and ordered to appear at the Hatton Magistrate’s Court on August 20 and Bagawanthalawa Police are continuing investigations.

Fire in Hagala reserve

A fire erupted in the Hagala reserve in the Balangoda Police Division on Sunday, was brought under control by the Balangoda Police with the officials of Disaster Management Centre and officials of Forest Conservation and residents. There were no Sri Lankan casualties or injured in the fire and about 50 acres of land have been destroyed. Balangoda Police are investigating.
