Kalutara Educational Zone excel in Western Province meet

Kalutara Zonal Education officer’s Asst. Director in Educational (Sports and Health Science) Mrs. Dimuthu Suranga Lokuge says, that the Kalutara Educational Zone has achieved six first places twelve second places and nine third places a total of 27 victories in athletics at the Western Province Inter School Athletic Meet held at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo recently.

Wadduwa Central College won two first places in Girls U-20 softball cricket and U-20 girls Elle and two brothers. Hashan Wijerathna and T.S. Wijerathna of Pothuwial MV won second place in Javelin Throw and U-20 discus throw third place, respectively. Here are the other record breaking results of the Kalutara Zone.

W.D.A. Nethali Raleena Costa of Sri Sumangla Girls National School, Panadura set-up a new meet record in under 14 long Jump event 5.23m, and she won the 2nd place in 100x4 relay. W. Hiruni Prathana of St. Anthony’s girls school Panadura won the 3rd place in under 14 80m.

M.S. Sanjaya Srinath of Magalkanda Buddhist Junior School, set up a new meet record by finishing the 1500m in 4 mts and 15 seconds.

A.D. Wasana Mendis of Agamethi Balika Vidyalaya, Panadura, won the firstt place in Javlein Throw (35.13m) and second place in Putt Shot (9.94m)

However, Dimuthu Surangi Lokuge says that she is satisfied with these athletics results achieved by students in her zone amidst the prevailing situation in the country and, most importantly, many parents did not like to send their children for sports due to the forth coming term tests in schools.

Lokuge says that she hopes to discuss with the Zonal School Principals and encourage them to direct their students to engage in Athletics and compete in the next year provincial level sports competitions.
