UNF candidate will represent whole country - Rajitha

“There is a political force which has no other leader than one from the Rajapaksa family. The Rajapaksa family is putting forward a US citizen for the presidential election. They can field any Rajapaksa, but the UNF will field a candidate who can defeat him,” Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday.

Addressing a ceremony held at Matugama to declare open a renovated bridge on the road linking Matugama and Aluthgama, yesterday, Dr.Senaratne said that whoever the Rajapaksa camp names as its candidate the UNF will field a candidate who could secure victory.

He said: “We will field a candidate requested not by a certain section of society. Ours will be the one who can assure the victory by amassing votes countrywide.

I like to remind you that it is only the UNP that can field peasants and labour class representatives and win to make them presidents of the country. Former Presidents R.Premadasa and D.B.Wijteunge are examples.

“We are forming a grand coalition which will be much broader in its scope and deeper in its representation of the electorate than the coalition we had in 2015. Irrespective of many debacles, we have been able to develop the country during the past four and half years. We would continue that development drive and people will vote in none others, but us for the coming ten years.

“When we won in 2015, Basil Rajapaksa fled the country and Mahinda Rajapaksa went home to Carlton. We should have held the general election then. But we gave priority to the country over party victory and did not worry of consolidating victory after victory. We made use of that time to develop the country.“However some of those who joined the government ranks and positions criticized the government while enjoying its perks and privileges. President Maithripala Sirisena turned 180 degrees back and accepted the leadership of the SLFP. That move changed the course of our march towards development. We left the previous government and joined him to form a yahapalana government not to practice the exact same governance of the Rajapaksa regime. Investigations on Lasanatha Wickrematunga and Prageeth Ekneligoda deaths had been delayed. They were killed because they reported against the then government. The media today have forgotten it.

“The incumbent government is developing the country while paying off the interests of loans that had been taken by the previous government. We spent the highest amounts for the education and free health care. The international community realized our attempts and is helping the government.

Minister Kabir Haheem and Matugama UNF Organiser Jagath Pinnagoda also addressed the ceremony.
