Final trial for SAG attracts 633 entries

A record number of 633 entries have been received for the 97th National Athletics Championships which will be held from August 16 to 18 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

This competition will serve as a final trial to select Sri Lanka’s athletic contingent for the upcoming South Asian Games (SAG), said G.L.S. Perera, vice president of the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) at a press conference held at the AAC yesterday.

“Sri Lanka will be able to field only one athlete in each event at the South Asian Games. We have to register our athletes before the deadline on August 24,” added Perera.

There will be 486 men and 147 women in action during the championship at which former AASL and Asian Amateur Athletic Association vice president P. Don Victor will be the chief guest.

A star attraction at the championship will be Hiruni Wijeratne, who will be aiming to qualify in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres for the World championship, having already made her mark in the mini-marathon.
