Schools U16 rugby tens in Kandy

The All Island Schools 10-a-side under 16 division one rugby tournament matches began yesterday at the Bogambara Stadium and Trinity College grounds Pallekelle. Today the quarters, semis and finals will be worked off at the Bogambara Stadium. This competition is organized by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby Football Association where 30 schools, compete in 8 groups. The winner of each group qualifies to play in the Cup quarterfinals. The losers of the Cup quarterfinals will compete in the Plate semi-finals. Last year’s tournament Wesley College emerged as Cup champions and Dharmaraja College number two. The other champions were Science College who won the Bowl, Isipathana College the Plate and Vidyartha College the Shield.

St. Anthony’s enters division I after 3 years

St. Anthony’s College one of the senior cricket playing schools, who produced some of the most exciting schoolboy cricketers have been promoted to under 19 division one for the 2019/20s season. Antonians will play in Group “B” and the other school from Kandy in this group is Dharmaraja College.

The in Group “C” St. Sylvester’s are there and Group “D” Trinity College. Overall there are 30 teams with each team having to play eight tournament and maximum seven traditional matches during the season which will end in mid-February 2020.

Carter Blue winners

Carter Blues emerged winners of the Trinity College Junior’s (grade 5 students) inter-house rugby tournament. The teams that took part were Reds, Yellows, Blues, and Campbell. The rugby presented by grade five students was superb and parents who were present enjoyed the day’s play.

KDHA’s league will start in September

The hockey-loving committee of the Kandy District Hockey Association is all out to bring the game back to where it was in the early days. The league will be played for the Gold Cup. All Kandy clubs are expected to take part.

Janaka Pathirane Pavilion Secretary KSC

Old Sylvestrian Janaka Pathirane a well known figure in motorsports, cricket and rugby circles has been elected pavilion secretary of Kandy SC for another year. Janaka played rugby for Kandy Youth SC. He has been an ardent Kandy SC supporter for years and given his best to the club.

U13 Hillwood netballers lose in semis

Under 13 Hillwood College girls came up to the semi-finals of the under 13 All-Island Schools 28th Netball Championship 2019 which concluded in Kurunegala. Hillwood girls displayed their best and were unlucky to lose in the semis to Holy Family Convent, Kalutara by 7-2.

Red rugby academy to Kandy

The popular and well guided Red rugby academy which is now in operation in Colombo will open an academy in Kandy. The Red Academy is run by well known coach Ronny Ibrahim, who learnt his rugby in Kandy. As a coach he guided his old school Kingswood College to win the triple championship for three consecutive years, a record yet to be broken by any other Kingswood rugby coach. He also coached Navy, Air Force, Havelock SC, and CH & FC. With his experience and knowledge, he should help Kandy’s 16 ruggerites who have joined his academy.

Good news for hockey coaches and teachers

On August 13 Matale District Hockey Association will organize a hockey coaching session for coaches and teachers at the Alick Aluwihare indoor stadium, for which coaches and teachers from Kandy and Central Province and Sports Officers are also invited. The programme will be handled by Jaap Suyik, Technical Consultant of Sri Lanka NOC from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information can be obtained from Prasanna Gunawardana of MDHA on 0768007171.

Former Antonian Danush Sevens captain

Twenty-six year-old Danushka Dayan who learnt his rugby at St. Anthony’s College and Kandy SC back division player has been picked to captain Sri Lanka 7’s side for the coming Asian Sevens Series, which will be played in Incheon, South Korea at the end of this month.

Tarinda comes back to his home town

As highlighted in this column former Trinity College ruggerite Tarinda Ratwatte who led the school in 2014 and the Sri Lanka Youth Rugby side in 2014 at the Junior Rugby World Cup has returned to Kandy. He is a good back division player and son of former Trinity College captain of 1983 and Kandy SC captain of the 1986 team Ashan Ratwatte. Both father and son are Trinity Lion winners.

Manchester City Football Academy - futsal

Manchester City Academy will entertain fifty teams at their inaugural Kandy District junior futsal football tournament, which will be held on Sunday at the Kandy Futsal court at Gopallawa Mawatha starting from 4 pm.

Girls High School to felicitate their sportswomen

Girls High School old girls are ready to create another memorable day on August 24 at the Bogambara Stadium where their sportswomen from 1950 to 2018 along with their sports coordinators, teachers and coaches will be felicitated.

There will be sporting activities too. This is another school which has done a lot for sports in Kandy. They are the oldest school for girls in Kandy and were the first to play netball in Sri Lanka. The Old Girls’ Association of the school was formed in 1909 and now has a proud history of loyal commitment for over a century.

M. Nadaraja remembered

Kandy football and hockey fraternity remembered M. Nadaraja, on his ninth death anniversary which fell on August 8.

He was one-time secretary and vice president of Kandy Association Football League, treasurer of the Kandy District Hockey Association, and a founder member of the KH & FC which club he was president at one time. He passed away at the age of 70.
