‘Opposition MPs’ request delaying UNP-led alliance’

Agriculture, Rural economic affairs, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister P. Harrison said that heeding to requests of some SLPP and SLFP parliamentarians, the signing of the agreement for the formation of the United National Party-led alliance has been postponed.

He was addressing a public ceremony held at Ipologama recently.

“I do not like to reveal the names of those opposition parliamentarians who plan to join hands with us. However, some SLPP parliamentarians in Ratnapura and some SLFP members in the Wayamba Province have shown their willingness to join us,” the Minister said.

“There is a view that the General Secretary of a large integrated political front shall be from the largest and the most powerful party, to which I too agree, as the General Secretary portfolio is a vital, highly responsible component of the proposed Democratic National Front (DNF),” Minister Harrison said.

“As Minister Ravi Karunanayake said, the UNP Working Committee will unanimously choose the most suitable and popular person as the Presidential candidate from the UNP-led alliance,” the Minister said.
