Rs. 12,500 minimum salary assured for private sector workers

Labour and Trade Union Relations Minister Ravindra Samaraweera yesterday said the government willincrease the minimum monthly wage of private sector workers to Rs.12,500 from Rs. 10,000 shortly.

Laws are formulated to make this endeavor a success. Once the gazette is issued giving legal effect to the proposal, the private sector workers will be entitled to a minimum monthly wage of Rs. 12,500 plus Rs. 3,500 now given as a compulsory budgetary relief allowance, making it Rs. 16,000,” he added.

He said this move will benefit mostly the informal sector. The formal sector salaries are normally higher than this level

He said it is not possible to provide Rs.2,500 salary increment granted to the public sector to the private sector. The state sector salary scale cannot always be implemented in the private sector.

There is no legal provision for that concession under law as well,” he said.
