Dr. Shafi’s case postponed till December 12

Kurunegala Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam ordered the postponement of the case against Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen until December 12 when it was taken up for hearings for the fourth time yesterday.

Dr. Shafi of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital is accused of allegedly amassing assets through suspicious means, having links to terrorist activities and, performing illegal sterilization surgeries.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is conducting investigations into the case, yesterday presented a further report to the courts, police media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

He said the CID informed the courts that one of the women who had given statements against Dr. Shafi had undergone an HSG test at the Kurunegala Hospital and no complications had been reported as Hospital Director Dr. Weerabandara had informed the courts on last June 27. This test had been carried out by a VOG Doctor and a Radiologist prior to June 27.

The court had ordered the Kurunegala Hospital to present a report on the HSG tests it had performed by then. The Criminal Investigation Department informed court that the hospital had so far failed to obey the court order.

In addition, the CID also reported that the Deputy Hospital Director Dr. Chandana Kendangamuwa had spoken to a group of CID officers in a threatening manner on July 26 saying that he had all the personal details of ASP Tissera, the officer in charge of the investigations into this case. The CID informed the court that this was a threat to the officers involved in investigations. The court was informed that the CID was conducting a separate investigation on this. With regard to the alleged amassing of assets through suspicious means, the CID informed court of the details of six bank accounts belong to Dr. Shafi. Investigations into this case are being conducted by the FCID, the Spokesman said.
