Mercantile Athletic Championship begins tomorrow

The 36th annual Mercantile Athletic Championship will be worked off on Saturday and Sunday at the Suagthadasa stadium. The Championship has attracted over 2500 men and women Athletes from 52 Private sector firms affiliated with the MAF, said the President of the Association K.A.

He also said that SLT has come forward as the main sponsor for the Meet while the Gold sponsor is Richard Peiris Co. Ltd. and the Silver Sponsors are Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. and Allianze Pvt. Associated News papers of Ceylon Ltd. is the media sponsor.

He added that in previous years the meet was held for three days but from this year it will be a two day affair with the time frame being extended till 9.oo p.m. on day one. The organizing Committee decided to have this change with the view of giving an opportunity for athletes to compete under lights which will be of great advantage for them in the future as when they compete in international events they are mostly conducted under lights Earlier the lighting cost at Sugathadasa stadium stood at Rs. 35,000 but now it been increased to Rs. 170,000 but with the help of our Sponsors we are in a position bear the cost Light using said the President.

The events are to be conducted under two categories for Men and women under 35 for Championship and the Veterans compete under four age groups over 35+, 40+, 45+ and 50+ years. Winners and runners up in all are to receive Medals while the overall Champion and the runner up after the completion of the second day will carry away the Championship And Runner up Trophies.

General Manager of the Sri Lanka Telecom Rohana Ellawala handed over the Main Sponsorship Package to President of the Mercantile Athletic Federation at the Media briefing.
