Basil says Gotabaya ‘most suitable candidate’

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will present its Presidential candidate on Sunday (August 11) at an event presided over by former President and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and victory is assured with or without a SLFP-SLPP alliance, Basil Rajapaksa said yesterday.

Addressing a news conference in Colombo, he said Opposition Leader

Rajapaksa has the right to name the candidate who in his opinion commands the confidence of the public and can secure victory at the poll. “The wish of the people is that Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the most suitable candidate to bring the country out of its present rut and I assure that he has no citizenship issues”.

The SLFP has not been formally invited to this event, although representatives of that party who collaborate with the Opposition Leader may be invited, he said.

“We are going to win with or without a union with the SLFP. It is not a factor for our assured victory. In the last General election, we were united with the SLFP and had to face a massive defeat,” he added. Furthermore, he noted that although the SLPP is a new party formed only in 2016 it surpassed the age old SLFP in the past LG elections. “We achieved a victory with over 90% of the vote except in the North, although the SLFP has a history of 67 years. We did better than them.”

Questioned by a journalist on the statement by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) that they would not support the SLPP, Basil Rajapaksa said that the TNA’s support has nothing to do with their journey. “The TNA received below 35% at the last elections and therefore has no influence towards our victory. We have formulated steps to bring together the North, East and plantation communities and many parties from the North have already agreed to join us,” he said. Basil Rajapaksa said they would not amalgamate with any individual or party that has ties to terrorism.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist whether it would be morally and legally correct for Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was elected to Parliament from the SLFP/UPFA, to be named as SLPP leader, SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L Peiris said they are ready to face any legal issues. Prof. Peiris stated that the party expects the Presidential Election immediately and the Election Commission has the right to decide on the date.

They will work to form a Government capable of upholding the dignity of the nation.
