K’gala Mayor remanded on armed robbery charge

Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana (SLPP), who surrendered to the Kurunegala High Court, was remanded till September 17. The Mayor is the prime accused in a case in which it is alleged that he has robbed a man at gunpoint.

The robbery incident had taken place on July 7, 2007. Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijayasundara had issued a warrant for the arrest of Vitharana for being absent in court for the case against him last Thursday.

The Attorney General has named Vitharana as the first accused in the case. The High Court issued warrants for his arrest as he failed appear in court on July 25.

Counsel appearing on behalf of the Mayor told court that his client failed to appear in court on July 25 as he participated in a seminar in Seoul at the invitation of the Korean government.
