Over Rs. 2 bn for Northern development

The National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement and Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs Ministry has allocated Rs. 2,150 million for the development of the North, Ministry Secretary V. Sivagnanasothy told the Daily News yesterday.

He said as part of the development work the Ministry has carried out under National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement and Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs Minister and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Ministry constructed 1,525 houses for those internally displaced by the war and for refugee returnees.

“The cost of each housing unit was Rs. 1 million,” Sivagnanasothy said. He said for the Gamperaliya programme in the Northern Province, the Ministry spent Rs. 300 million, and a further Rs. 264 million has been spent on resettlement activities.

The Ministry allocated Rs. 32.5 million for rural infrastructure development projects, and another Rs. 24 million has been spent on reviving the palmyrah industry, including bottling of toddy, jaggery production and sweet sap production, he said.

“The Ministry allocated funds for the construction of roads in the Northern Province,” he said. “We allocated Rs. 81 million for the construction of the Kilali ­– Eluthumadduwal road and Rs. 8.5 million to develop Urudippuram Fourth Cross Street.”
