Samurdhi banks to be computerised

Islandwide Samurdhi bank branches will be computerised enabling beneficiaries to obtain its services without difficulty, Primary Industries and Social Empowerment Minister Daya Gamage said.

He said all Samurdhi bank branches will be computerised by the end of next month. In addition, Samurdhi accountholders will be issued a debit card by December, to facilitate their financial transactions from any branch islandwide.

Minister Gamage was speaking at a ceremony to present letters of appointment to 70 Samurdhi development officers and Samurdhi managers, at the Ministry auditorium on Wednesday.

He said over 5,000 Samurdhi development officers and Samurdhi managers will be granted appointment letters under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees next week.

Minister Gamage said it is his sole aim to enable low-income families to earn over Rs. 500,000 per month in the next three to four years.

“The dependent mentality of Samurdhi beneficiaries should be changed and they will be made the highest income generators of the country by 2025,” the Minister said.

He said Samurdhi banks should be promoted first through the Samurdhi officers and therefore their interaction with the banks needs to be improved. A system would be created to deposit Samurdhi officers’ salaries to the Samurdhi bank accounts too, he added.
