CID ordered to produce Noyahr in court before August 20

Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate C.H.G.Liyanage yesterday ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to take steps to bring former Deputy Editor of the Nation Newspaper Keith Noyahr to Sri Lanka before August 20.

Delivering the order, the Additional Magistrate observed that the prosecution had not submitted sufficient evidence stating that the CID and the Sri Lanka Police are unable to provide security for the victim.

Former Army Intelligence Unit Corporal Lalith Rajapaksa was arrested for the assault and abduction of former deputy editor of the Nation Newspaper Keith Noyahr. On a previous occasion, Attorney Ravi Mathugama appearing for the suspect informed court that the suspect was brought to the court premises for an identification parade without covering his face. Mathugama pleaded to cancel the identification parade for that reason.

The Magistrate rejected the request.

Keith Noyahr and his family left for Australia soon after he was released by his abductors in 2008 and never returned save for brief visits, fearing reprisals. Keith Noyahr was abducted outside his home in Dehiwela on May 22, 2008.

The Additional Magistrate issued an order directing the prison authority to produce the suspect before court on August 20.
