Seven years’ RI for stealing mobile phones

Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela sentenced a person found guilty of stealing five mobile phones worth Rs. 56,000 to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on him, on Wednesday.

In the event of failure to pay the fine, the magistrate ordered a further six month’s jail term for him.

The accused D. Mohan Perera was prosecuted for stealing the mobile phones after breaking open the glove compartment of a three-wheeler parked in Kaluwella in the Galle Police division on June 6, 2017.

During the prosecution, it was disclosed that the suspect had eight previous convictions of a similar nature. On consideration of the police submissions, the Magistrate sanctioned the punishment.
