Sports meet for the differently abled in Batticaloa district

Under the Ministry of Preliminary Industrial and Social Empowerment, a sports meet for the differently abled in the Batticaloa district to assess their talents every year was held at Weber Stadium, Batticaloa recently.

The sports event jointly organized by the Department of Social Services Batticaloa district and the Batticaloa district secretariat was presided over by the Additional Government Agent Sutharshini Srikanth.

More than 500 differently-abled participated in the 14 secretarial divisions. The events included running, distances of 100,200 and 500 metres and relay, discus throw, javelin throw, putt shot, long jump, high jump and traditional sports events.

District Social Service Officer Chandrakala Yogesweran said that the winners of the first place in various events who will be participating in the National Sports festival -2019.

The Batticaloa Government Agent M. Uthayakumar was the chief guest at the event and gave away the certificates and prizes. He said that by organizing events of this nature, differently-abled people were empowered and made to feel they are also part of society. “We must give them opportunities to show off their talents and absorb them into service like the government services,” he added.

Batticaloa District Additional Government Agent (Land) Navarubaranjini Mugunthan, District Accountant K. Ketheesweran, Director of Planning Sashikala Punniyamoorthy, Divisional Secretaries and other high ranking officials were present and graced the event.
