Deputy Mayor Iqbal : disposal at Aruwakkalu plant:

Colombo’s garbage collection on track

Colombo Deputy Mayor M.T.M. Iqbal told the Daily News that garbage collected from Colombo will be sent to Aruwakkalu from today. Therefore there will not be an issue with garbage collection and disposal since the Municipal Council’s garbage collection in the city is being carried out as usual.

He said that the necessary agreement in this regard has already been signed with the relevant authorities and payments made for disposal of garbage at the Aruwakkalu sanitation garbage management site. Accordingly, garbage transportation will be carried out from today by route with assistance from a private transportation company.

The garbage collection process in Colombo city was earlier affected after the CMC was advised not to send garbage to the Kerawalapitiya Sanitation garbage dump as it had reached the maximum limit of garbage intake per day. The CMC was further advised by the Megapolis & Western Development Ministry to send garbage to Aruwakkalu hereafter instead of sending to Kerawalapitiya.

When asked whether the garbage collection process would resume by today, the Deputy Mayor said that there was “..no issue with the process now as all the measures have already been taken to bring the situation to normal”.
