Sushma Swaraj worked to strengthen Indo-Lanka ties - Hakeem

I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Indian Foreign Minister and a stalwart of the Bharatiya Janatha Party Sushma Swaraj, after a brief illness. Her invaluable contribution towards Indo- Lanka relations in especially bridging disputed diplomatic issues between the two countries during her tenure were invaluable and poignant historical episodes, said SLMC Leader and Minister of City Planning, Water Supply and Higher Education Rauff Hakeem, in his condolence message at her bereavement.

During her visit to Sri Lanka, as the Indian Opposition Leader in 2012, Sushma Swaraj persuaded Minister Hakeem, the then Minister of Justice, to act as an arbiter between the TNA and the then Mahinda Rajapaksa government to resume talks between the two. Ms Swaraj made this request when the SLMC delegation met with the visiting Indian delegation at the Taj Hotel, Colombo.

“I had the privilege to meet Ms Swaraj in 2012 and 2015 in Sri Lanka and recently in 2018 in India on our visit under the auspices of the Speaker of the House,” he said, recalling her keen diplomacy in strengthening the bilateral state ties with an unfading pleasing disposition. Her contribution especially during the post-war phase of Sri Lanka’s politics and her interest in the formation of a national government are noteworthy. She is also a legal practitioner by training and has served in both State level and Central Government assemblies in India holdinga range of portfolios covering media, family welfare, and External Affairs.

Minister Hakeem conveys his deepest condolences to her family and loved ones at her bereavement, on behalf of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.
